Payday 2 is probably my favorite game this year so far. I’ve soaked way too many hours than I care to admit, and almost ended some friendships over incompetency on jobs. You know that feeling you get when you play a stealth game and restart a bunch of times so you can do it perfectly? That is how I feel playing Payday 2, because when you finally do everything perfectly on a job, and you escape with millions of dollars without having to fire a shot or fight a single cop, there is no other game that gives me that much satisfaction.
Luckily, I had the opportunity to sit down with the game director from Overkill Software, David Goldfarb, to talk about the future of Payday 2 and the future of the series in-general. Now he had to stay tight-lipped about a lot of their plans, but he slips in some little hints on what to expect for the future. Needless to say I feel like we have only played a glimpse of what Payday 2 has to offer.
Payday: The Heist grabbed the attention of smarter FPS fans. Are there any plans to bring any fan favorite updated Payday 1 maps/heists into the game?
I cannot comment at this time. Just know that we definitely have plans.
The addition of the RPG elements to this game really puts PAYDAY 2 in its own genre. Are you happy with the results? Would you add anything to it if you could?
We are quite happy with how it turned out but there is always more we want to do. We can’t really comment on what we’d like to add, but we do have a year of DLC planned with tons of heists, masks, weapons, and other (secret) stuff.
The strides PAYDAY 2 has taken between the first and second are incredible. You not only offer realistic criminal scenarios, but more importantly you offer the ability to become career criminals with the “Crime.net”. Do you have a larger vision for “Crime.net” other than it being a cool dynamic for picking jobs?
We definitely have an intention of building Crime.net into a hub for more contacts, gambling, and other special opportunities down the line. We’ve just started though, and we’ve got a long way to go before all that’s ready for prime-time.
I know you have 5 DLC packs in the works, obviously without giving too much away, what should the players expect in these additions? And is there a roll-out plan for them or is it more “when it’s done we will release it”?
Armored Transport is the first DLC. We haven’t announced the contents of that, or our other DLC packs, but you can be sure when we do we think it’ll make a lot of people happy.
What can gamers expect in terms of updates to the title besides possibly adding new maps? New weapons? New skills? Gameplay tweaks?
All of the above. So … very much … of that. New difficulties, Safehouse … even some unexpected things!
Let’s say you are lucky enough to create a Payday 3 for Xbox One and PS4, do you have an idea of what you would try to create? Giving players full robber customization?
We have a lot of ideas about what might or might not work but, right now, we are focused on PAYDAY 2 and making that the best it can be. We have a long haul ahead of us to observe what people enjoy and what can be made better so I think we’re going to use this opportunity to really take note so we’re ready to make the right thing when it’s time.
