Extra! Extra! Steam’s Summer Sale is in full effect as of today. That’s right, we’ve been waiting. The 2013 Summer Getaway Sale will run from July 11 to July 22. Word has it, its a free for all over there, as customers wave wallets while simultaneously shouting their desires at Gabe Newell, who’s in a frenzied tiff at the cash register. Well, actually, Steam’s site is seeing some heavy traffic so it may become sluggish or display an error message.
Update: I found this thanks to twitter. Use this nifty tracker. It shows you what’s on sale, in order of how big the discount is. Also, Time Gentlemen, Please! and Ben There, Dan That double pack for fifty cents. Dig around in your cushions and get that!
There will be a hundred some odd Daily Deals over the course of the next eleven days, sprinkled intermittently with Flash Sales which swap every eight hours. This year Steam users will also be able to vote on games to influence the discounting with the ‘Communities Choice Voting Sales.’
Also new this year, since Steam implemented its Trading Card System — a unique version of achievements that grant collectibles — buying discounted games will earn you trading cards, some of which are exclusively tied to the Getaway Sale (read: and can be earned no other way). You’ll be able to collect, trade and craft over 50 new sets of cards. “Each set can be crafted into badges, backgrounds, emoticons and other rewards,” Valve explains.
Happy shopping. Please remember that some of you have families to feed.
