After the Silent Grove and Those Who Speak Dragon Age comic series I’ve been looking forward to seeing this story continue. While I love both Isabela and Alistair it is Varric who is the story teller of the group and having a story about him as well as told by him has so much potential. Dragon Age: Until We Sleep #1 does not disappoint in that area. We get to see Varric in action while reading a narrative the he is telling. It takes a page or two for that to sink in but once it does it is really funny.
However, the story itself is far from a comedy. It is dark. Having followed this group for 6 comics now it is I’m invested and seeing the events in this issue are emotional. Yet, there seems to be hope because their plan is working so far. If Varric can stay sharp. The issue ends with a decision on Varric’s part that we’ll have to wait and see if it is turns out good or bad.
The artwork in this issues is really great. It shows the dark depths and trouble the group is in while being very detailed. Plus, anytime Varric is the central figure he is cast in his best light just like he tells the story. Seeing the artwork and paneling tie into the idea of Varric telling his own story this time makes it one of the best comics I’ve read in a long time. Frankly, I’m fully keyed up and ready for the next couple issues. I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. You should be reading this comic series. Period.
