In a (not so) surprising move, Rockstar announced today that Grand Theft Auto V now has an official release date of September 17, 2013. There were previously reports of a Spring release date, but per their usual development process, Rockstar has decided to postpone the release date of the newest GTA.

In some ways, this is both a good and bad move. On one hand, the first quarter of 2013 is loaded with heavy hitters for both consoles, and having GTAV come out in March would have put it up against big titles such as Bioshock: InfiniteGears of War: Judgement and The Last of Us. Moving out of that quarter means that Rockstar gives GTAV the month of September all to itself, something that Rockstar has shown it likes in the past. On the other hand, there’s a risk that releasing the newest GTA so close to (theoretically) the release of new consoles might hurt the game. Typically, GTA games sell so well that it may not matter, but it is something to watch regardless. We’ll have more on GTAV as it comes.
