I did not really know what to expect going into a comic that is a prequel to a movie that I know just a little about. It will star Will Smith and it is set at least 1000 years in the future after humans have abandoned Earth. And that is all I knew about it. However, the comic does a really nice job of both explaining the back story of the After Earth universe but also working in some action. We find humans now are on Nova Prime. We left Earth because we had poisoned the planet and it was too toxic to stay. We tried to start a new civilization but some of the old remnants remain. Science and Religion are still butting heads, but the Ranger Corps are working to keep society peaceful and protected.
The story focuses on a few members of the Ranger Corps, the Raige family, and how their determination and sense of duty saved the humans from their first alien contact. Which came in the form of an attack. The aliens became known as the Skrel. The story of the attack and how the Raige’s helped turn the tide hundreds of years earlier is told to a young Cypher Raige as a bed time story. It has a lot of action and yet the action is not the point of the story. It is really well written and kept me reading what is essentially the ancestral history of a character in a movie that I’ve not even seen a trailer for. Yes, I was fully engrossed as I read it.
The story ends with Cypher falling asleep and his parents talking about how he is a strong boy. In the upcoming movie we’ll get to see how he turns out as Will Smith plays the character of Cypher now that he has grown up. I’m curious to see how the information in the comic will tie in with the movie as the main story of the comic took play hundreds of years before the movie. I’m also looking forward to seeing the movie now as the world it is set in seems really interesting with a mix of pioneering spirit on the new planet but also the technology to get there and thrive. The artwork in the comic is really nicely done without focusing too much on the technology but instead on the people of the story. I suspect the movie will be similar where futuristic technology is just used and accepted without having to explain it all to the viewer.
