Star Trek The Next Generation Doctor Who Assimilation #5 was mostly spent building trust between our 2 groups.  There was very little progress in finding a way to stop the Cybermen but everyone is on the same page now.  It made for a little bit of a dull read, but when the Doctor is involved it things are always at least somewhat interesting.  The Doctor did something in this issue I do not recall ever seeing him do before.  He took someone to the future to show them what would happen if they did not change their intended plan.  He takes people to the future all the time. Even to see their own lives, but I don’t recall it ever to be to change someone’s actions in the present.

A large section of this comic was devoted to explaining why Picard will not, even temporarily, work with the Borg.  Star Trek fans will already know why and do not need this added detail shown in flash back form.  I understand why the writers included it but it seemed like an overly long process to explain it to the Doctor, Amy and Rory just to have Picard eventually come around to their point of view.

It took 5 issues but the Doctor and Captain Picard are finally seeing eye to eye. While many of the crew on the Enterprise had already come to trust the Doctor it took a talk with Amy for Captain Picard to start to come around.  His history with the Borg made it very difficult for him to accept the idea of working with them.  Even if it was against a larger threat of the Cybermen. With 3 issues left in this story arc I’m hoping we get to some of the Doctor’s classic plans pretty quickly.

The Fourth Doctor sort of did the same thing in Pyramids of Mars. He took his companion (Sarah Jane Smith) to the 1980s to show her what would happen if they didn’t stop Sutekh in 1911.
