Movies, Music, and Designer Toys all are tied together in some way. Toy production now ranges from big name movie licensing to a collectable figure. The three have learned to co-exist, and in the recent years they have something new in common. Each has their own awards night to celebrate the people who work hard in their respective fields. The Designer Toy Awards recently announced their 2012 nominees and with a strong field, this is one awards night I don’t want to miss.

The Designer Toy Awards is brought to us by Clutter magazine. Clutter magazine started in 2004, to help feed the collectors with news, interviews and much more. The magazine can be found mainly in vinyl stores and online at many vinyl retailers. Collecting the magazine has become almost as important as getting the latest toy.

But what really is a Designer Toy? Is it that new Hasbro Batman figure or the awesome new Barbie that just came out with the removable shoes? No not really, it’s the works that are brought to us by Frank Kozik, 64 Colors, Huck Gee, and many more artists. It’s their masterpieces that are made from vinyl or resin that people will line up for hours to get. Just take a look at the recent San Diego Comic Con where their exclusives at the Kidrobot booth would sell out in minutes. Kozik, Chuckboy, Mahakala, and Huck Gee did theses items.

The Designer Toys 2012 will be hosted by fellow artist Sucklord and will be taking place in NYC on October 13, 2012. There are many categories that one may win in and you don’t need to be an artist to receive recognition and acclaim. The awards range from Artist of the Year to Blog of the Year and even Store of the Year, each with high power names behind it. In 2011 the likes of Michael Lau, Three A, Jason Freeny and many more were honored.

What does this really say for Designer Toys? How far have they really come? Each person in some way or some how has started a collection in their lifetime. Designer Toys can come in all forms, from just a single figure to a complete set. Kidrobot has become known for its blind boxes. People will spend weeks trying to figure out if there is a formula to getting that chase or color variant. Most notably The Simpsons Series 2 was the easiest to figure out. Each case had the same layout but a different zombie Simpson.

For most of the awards. You can register on the website and vote. For some of the higher categories like Toy of the Year and Brand of the Year, you need to be on the Designer Toy Award board to vote. This voting system is best for any awards. Some artists have a bigger following then others and they can easily get the votes needed to win. It’s one reason why I don’t watch the MTV Music Awards anymore. It seems like each year Lady GaGa wins every award, even Best Male Artist At the end of the night your just scratching your head.

This year some of the biggest names are nominated. From Huck Gee as an artist to vinylpulse.com as a blog and even Kidrobot as a brand. This site will be trying to bring you as many interviews with the nominees as we can. Check out tomorrow when we will be interviewing the very own Sucklord, the coveted host and nominee.

To vote you can visit this website here. Designer Toy Awards.
