Battle Beasts #1 is the sort of comic I was hoping Enormous would be. Not in terms of the graphical style but in terms of the story. I’m not really familiar with the original Battle Beasts, but the new comic’s style seems fitting as it has a bright colorful, cartoon look to it. What I was hoping for with Enormous was a story that would make for a fun made for TV movie.  With the start of the Battle Beasts series it seems like that is what we’ll be getting. There are going to be a sum spoilers going forward, but I’ll try not to get into anything to detailed or specific.

The comic starts with our three main characters getting their dinner interrupted.  This leads into a battle that shows of each of their fighting styles.  However, this whole time the story is being narrated by in a way that fills in a little back story and some details about the group.  It is very similar to how a movie might start where the director wants to get straight into some action but knows that the people watching will not have all the info they need to understand what is going on.  I think it is a great way to start a series as it immediately got my attention by jumping into things but without leaving me confused as to why things were happening.

The story moves on to Bliss, a linguist for the Department of Defense.  She is not well liked there by the main scientists but her breakthrough it about to change that.  Unfortunately, her discovery also draws the attention of the Battle Beasts.  As the comic plays out we start to see how these two pieces could fit together.   I’m looking forward seeing where this story goes next month now that we have a little background and all the man characters seems to have been introduced.
