“Orchid” is a new comic series that is brought to us by the legendary Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. Dark Horse comics started the series late last year and now the first four copies are out completing the series first volume. I must say if you are one who likes a great comic with action, class warfare, and futurist themes and oh did I say action? Well then this comic is for you.
The comic picks up in a world where the tides have rose and the world as we know of today is not the same. It has created genetic mutations and creatures the size of fairy tale monsters. We also have classes, from prostitutes, to a leader that rules by fear. It seems like everybody has come to accept their role. Except for a very small group of people called the “Shadow Rebels”. This is where the comic picks up.
There is a great mask that plays a large role in this comic. And not everybody can wear it. For the few who can wear the mask it creates a great power within, but for those who do try and don’t have the power they die a horrible death. The rebels have been caught and the mask lands in General Wolfe’s armies hands. One brave soul does get away and this is where we meet our main role character Orchid. Orchid, who prostitutes in town, is forced into this world that she does not want to be part of. She has to follow Tom, the last of the rebels alive, and at each point tries to get away but can’t.
All of this just in the first issue and there are three more in this volume. Tom Morello has a very unique comic that you don’t often see. One of my favorite parts about this volume doesn’t even have anything to do with the comic. At the end they also announce when the next two volumes will be out. That means Dark Horse is well behind this comic and it has a future to thrive. The artwork is also one of the best I seen of late. Orchid is a comic that is a gritty futuristic comic that people would be well advised to give a chance. Oh, did I mention Tom Morello gives you a song for each issue? Who can pass that up?
