Dishonored has the possibility of being this year’s sleeper title that very few have heard of yet. You take control of Carvo, a legendary guard for an empress, who gets framed for her murder. Luckily you have the option to take revenge on those who framed you or set the record straight and clear your name. Corvo is a skilled assassin, though his many talents extend far beyond daggers and arrows, he also possesses supernatural abilities.

In the live demo you start off on a mission to kill two brothers, Lord Custus and Morgan Pindilton. As the demo starts in a dark street, you head towards a bathhouse called the Golden Cat, where you need to find the two brothers by any means. Corvo starts off with a simple knife and a few supernatural abilities. At first, you sneak up to a guard and take him out, stabbing him with a knife to the neck silently. He then throws the body over his shoulder and picks the ability “Blink”. Blink gives you the ability to teleport to travel across short distances. He then points to a platform uses the skill and hides the body from other guards patrolling the surrounding area.

As the player continues he begins looking for ways to enter the Golden Cat. As he scouts, he overhears guards on the ground floor, talking of a plague that was conquering the city. Continuing on, without being detected, he spots a pipe under water that leads into the Golden Cat. That is when he is able to possess a fish to use as his vessel to swim through the pipe.

While inside you overhear two women having a conversation about the two brothers locations. Morgan is downstairs in a steam room and Custus is upstairs in a room with a woman named Violetta . While on his way downstairs to assassinate Morgan, he sneaks up behind a guard looking out of a window and begins to pick pocket the master key for the bathhouse, he gets it. He then begins heading downstairs where there are two men guarding the entrance to the steam room.

The player waits for an opportunity to strike one of the guards so no alarms will be set off. Once again, without being seen, he kills one of them. Knife to the neck. He then “blinks” to a dark corner and hides the body to cover his tracks. Corvo then places a trap called the spring razor, which is a tightly wined metal that can cut off limbs when an enemy is nearby. He sets it where the guard he killed just moments before was standing. While the guard is patrolling the area, he is aware that his partner is not at his usual post, thus setting off the spring razor cutting his arm and leg off brutally leaving him to die

In this unique game there are multiple ways to kill your target, but the player picks an effective yet silent path. He enters a room where you can control the steam. He gently turns the valve and overheats the room, killing Morgan slowly. He then continues upstairs to where his brother Custus was and possesses a rat with another one of his abilities. Corvo sneaks upstairs without being seen, but he is very vulnerable to attacks where guards can step on you and kill you immediately.

He turns back into a human, blinks behind a wall for a brief moment, and gets seen by a guard. He quickly moves away from the guards sight and isn’t detected. When a guard sees you there are 3 lightning bolts that appear over the players head that warn you after being caught. There awareness level doesn’t drop until they continuously try to find you.

The player then heads out a window, blinks to a ledge where he can see Lord Custus and his mistress Violetta. As you watch them talk you are able to posses and control Lord Custus from a distance. While doing so, Violetta asks if he is feeling alright and starts walking away towards the balcony. Corvo closes the door behind him Lord Custus, soon after the player kills and throws his body over the balcony into the water finishing his mission.

Corvo then reenters the room, and is greeted by Violetta screaming. Using an arrow gun, he shoots her, she immediately goes unconscious. He then jumps out of a window falling into the water and swims away from the Golden Cat. He sees another mistress, possesses her, and walks toward the guards in hopes of distracting them.

He jumps out of her body and blinks to what seems to be a secretive dark area where he accidentally alerts guards. While they are about to attack, he freezes time and blinks away. He then unfreezes time and the guard swings at where he thought you were standing, the guard then begins to wonder where you went and starts looking for you as he walks back into the dark ally.

The main point of the game is to approach the mission in stealth, combat, or a combination of both. They also mentioned you will be able to upgrade your guns and abilities to a certain level. You collect ruins to gain power ups for your abilities these are found though out the missions ranging from 12 to 40 in each. Also this isn’t an open world as some people thought, more of an open area where you can choose to pick the path to start missions, similar to Deus Ex: Human Revolution in ways.

It was amazing to see the hype machine explode last week with the debut trailer for Dishonored, We had no idea what we were getting the chance to see when we met with Bethesda, but it appears that they have a sure hit on their hands. Mixing the best features from multiple genres and offering the fun yet gorey gameplay that we all love for some reason.

Dishonored is set for a 2012 release and we look forward to learning and seeing more of Corvo while we wait.
