Not many people have taken a real look at PvP in Guild Wars 2. Why? In the Original Guild Wars, PvP was very much unbalanced due to skills, and secondary professions, all which left a bad stigma for what Guild Wars 2 PvP would be like. Well, you can rest assure that the developers are making an effort to change everything you know about MMORPG PvP, balance all the issues that existed in the original Guild Wars, and seamlessly integrate the experience alongside the core game world. Here we will give you an overview of the Guild Wars 2 PvP features and why you should be excited about it, whether you’re a hardcore competitor or casual player, there’s something for everyone.
Two Types of PvP: Structured PvP and World PvP
Structured PvP is what you would call the hardcore competitive PvP. This type of PvP is entirely based on player skill, teamwork, communication, and strategy. No equipment stats and levels apply here, as professions will use default stats. All that you will be able to choose is your skill build. Here is a list of points and features of structured PvP:
- Maximum 5v5
- Retain profession and race
- All players at max level
- All skill sets available
- Equipment stats and bonuses do not apply
ArenaNet is putting an effort to make the Guild Wars 2 PvP system into an E-Sport game, a professional video game sport like Starcraft 2 or Street Fighter IV. Guild Wars 2 will have a tournament style play, which is the organized competitive side of structured PvP where you achieve points and climb up the ranks, and move in brackets of tournaments. There are currently four known tournaments:
- Pickup Tournaments: These single-elimination tournaments wait for 8 teams to join before starting. Once they start, they go through 3 rounds of eliminations, with winners receiving qualifier points.
- Monthly Tournaments: For monthly tournaments, you’ll need a certain amount of qualifier points to join.
- Yearly Tournaments: These grand tournaments feature the winners from the monthly tournaments slugging it out for the right to call themselves the best PvP players of the year.
- Player-Run Tournaments: These tournaments will be customized by players, allowing for great flexibility and unique bragging rights.
