The My Xbox tab that many of us have come familiar with on Xbox.com will be replaced soon with a new Social tab. This tab will include a feature that will also be added to the newest Xbox 360 Dashboard update. This feature is the Beacon.
Beacons will allow players to put out an all points bulletin to friends letting them know that you are looking to play a certain game, at a certain time, and even what you plan on doing. For example you can set a beacon on Gears of War 3 and tell your friends “8PM-10PM Horde Mode – Insane Difficulty”. You can also put any message you want in the beacon to alert your friends.
When the new dashboard goes live you will also receive an alert if a game you have a beacon set up in is being played by friends. If you have a Windows Phone you will receive these alerts even before the update.
You can read the full update here, that goes over the new design coming to Xbox.com and other smaller features they are adding. This beacon feature is just the start to innovate the renowned Xbox Live. I can’t wait to see it get to the point where Xbox.com has a Public Beacon system where players can send out a blast through the whole Xbox Live community to find someone to join them in a game. This could really help in less popular games, maybe then you can make friends with someone who still loves playing Fuzion Frenzy 2 also?
