SteelSeries Diablo III Headset Review

We might still have a few months till Blizzard Entertainment unleashes Diablo III on us, but you can start getting into the Diablo mood with the various officially licensed peripherals from SteelSeries. The SteelSeries Diable III headset not only sports a great form but it’s function exceeded my expectations. Based off of the SteelSeries Siberia V2 USB headset, the Diablo 3 version packs many of the same features but is themed for Diablo fans.

The headset sports 50mm drivers on each ear. Giving gamers a rather full sound with rich deep low end and sharp clear high end. Like many other headsets I’ve used in the past I was expecting a hallow muddy sound, but these badboys pump out the complete opposite. Plus with the downloaded software I was able to tweak the 5 band equalizer to get an even richer sound. I was a bit surprised at how basic the software actually is. While you can save 8 presets, there aren’t any pre-made eq presets for you to start with. This would be nice for those don’t understand an equalizer and just want a quick change in sound.

I put the headset through various tests, from shooters, to a little MMO action and even gave some music a listen, and in all situations I really liked the sound this headset produced.

The design is where this headset differs the most from the other SteelSeries headsets. Finished in black with red accents, it also sports LEDs on each headphone. It just looks really sinister. It’s safe to say those that don’t even play Diablo will just enjoy the look of this headset. Beyond the look it’s also a very comfortable headset. While it feels a bit flimsy, it is incredibly light. Usually with headphones you start to feel them after a few hours of play, but not with the Diablo III Headset, I just really didn’t notice it was on my head.

There are two other nice design features that this headset sports. The first being the inline mic and volume control. and the second being the retractable microphone. When you store the headset you just slid the mic in and you no longer have to worry about catching it or having it ripped off the headset. This makes it great for travel.

Being a USB headset it’s fairly quick and simple to get up and running. Just plug it in and you are set to go. The cable on the headset will be fine for gaming on a laptop, and when you are using a desktop SteelSeries provided an additional USB extension. The headset will work with both the PC and Mac, and when I plugged it into my Windows 7 machine it detected and installed the correct drivers and was working even before I downloaded the software from SteelSeries.

Overall the SteelSeries Diablo III Headset is a very worthy gaming headset. SteelSeries continues to impress me with their products. The form and function of this headset are top-notch. My biggest complaint is the simplicity of the software. I would have liked to see a couple pre-made presets in the program, but since Diablo III really isn’t even out yet, I’m sure we can expect updates. Form the awesome Diablo theme of the headset to the full rich audio it pumps out, this is a perfect headset for any PC gamer.
