Just over a month after he stepped down as CEO of Apple the company that he co-founded decades ago, Steve Jobs has passed away at age 56. While Jobs or Apple haven’t created video games, one thing is certain, the creation and mass adoption of the iPhone was the catalyst for the major boom in mobile gaming.

Mobile gaming saw roughly 5.6 billion dollars in revenue in 2010 and that number is expected to jump to over 11 billion in the next 3 years. Prior to the advent of the iPhone and App store gamers were stuck only playing the basic of games on their phones.

We now see games like Angry Birds earning as much money as some console based games. We Also see big AAA console titles receiving mobile counterparts, and are even seeing our console games getting mobile on the go features. Before the iPhone and subsequent smart phone releases we couldn’t imagine managing our World of Warcraft characters when not at a PC.

Steve Jobs was a visionary, and his visions of technology and life will effect us and generations to come.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jobs family, and Apple has set-up an email account for anyone to send there “thoughts, memories, and condolences” rememberingsteve@apple.com
