Today’s Nintendo 3DS update gives Netflix subscribers the option to stream movies and TV shows onto their handhelds.  After updating their system, users can simply download the Netflix app and sync their account with their device.

“The new Netflix application looks great, plays great and is a fantastic consumer experience,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “It gives Nintendo 3DS owners access to an amazing wealth of movies and TV shows, which they can watch conveniently from thousands of free Wi-Fi access points across the country. Nintendo 3DS truly offers something for everyone.”

The 3DS will display 2D movies on the top screen, but Nintendo also said that users will soon be able to select special movies and shows to view in 3D.

Already there are over 1.5 million users who use Netflix on their Wii consoles, so we’ll see if more people will want to watch movies on their 3DS now that it can play them in 3D.
