Undead Labs : “Their Vision for the World of Class3″

Juicy information from Undead Labs in the form of a novel, or you can just read my list.

I just got through reading the latest blog post from “Phinney” of the Undead Labs team. This is quite the read and it felt like I was reading a contract with all my demands for this game. As I scrolled down reading I just nodded and said, “I like this, where do i sign?” If you are lazy like my friends you won’t bother reading this though and will instead wait for my summary of the information like the nerd you used in High School. As a matter of fact I doubt these asses are even reading this paragraph.

Oh well, if you have the time read the thing above if not hear are the juicy bits, if you are a little behind read this:

1. The setting is present day, except everything’s “completely gone to shit” and it’s happened fast.

2. You don’t know how the outbreak happened or the scale of it.

3. You’re cut off from the outside world and everything around you is in total chaos.

4. You’ll choose where to set up camp. Abandoned houses, a cabin, fairgrounds, a pub, a farm, et cetera  the choice is yours.

5. You’ll also need to decide whether to go it alone or team up with others. People complicate things, bringing in issues of morale and trust and teamwork.

6. Fuel and ammo are scarce resources.

7. Nothing draws a crowd of zombies faster than making a lot of noise. If you’re going to battle a massive horde head on, you’d better have an escape route planned and either a well-disguised hideout for laying low or a fortified stronghold to make your stand.

8. A lot of buildings are iconic, letting you know what’s inside as soon as you see one. A hospital will have medicine, police station will have guns, grocery store will have food, etc. What waits for you lurking in the shadows of Aisle 7 is a complete mystery though.

9. They have a goal of letting us explore, allowing us to interact with every building is a massive goal but they are taking it one step at a time.

10. Once you’ve chosen a location for your base, you’ll have choices to make about fortifications, facilities, and population.

11. Want to build a guard tower in the northeast corner to have a better sniping spot when a zombie horde comes shambling down Main Street? You can do that. Would you rather focus on gardening and growing food, or do you think it’s more valuable to improve your medical facilities? It’s up to you.

12. Maybe you ring a church bell or scatter a group of birds to make a diversion for a raid. (Sniping a church bell to cause a distraction would be pretty epic)

13. Their inspiration for ‘class3′ is that of Eastern Washington (state) mountains, rivers, cities, one-stoplight towns, and farmland far as the eye can see. This region had all the variety we were seeking.

14. 16 square kilometers of varied terrain and architecture form the Class3 world. (or roughly 10 square miles for us Americans…commies)

15. The world has forests, windy mountain roads, highways, rivers, farmland, fairgrounds, train tracks and tunnels.

SIDE NOTE: I would love a 1440×900 desktop background of that poster in the Forensic Lab. If you want to make that happen I would give you one hell of a handshake. Also so we are clear I am referring to the OWL.
