After Sony’s press conference last night I was curious about Medieval Moves. They mentioned it has one-to-one controls with the Move controller but it looked more like the guy doing the demo was just waving his arm around. So today, I headed over to the Sony booth and took some time check it out.
The first thing I should point out is that this is really a kid’s game. The movement through the level is completely scripted and on rails. Basically, the game moves you to the next area, you kill some guys or solve a puzzle, and then you move on. This means you can actually play with just one Move Controller, but they do give you the option of using two if you want to put your shield in your off hand. I had no trouble playing with just one controller and switching to blocking as needed.
The fighting is a one-to-one movement of your action to the screen, but you only have 5 different moves you can make. Your attacks break down by distance with a sword for up-close action, throwing stars for mid-range attacks, and bow with arrows for long range combat. You can also block with a shield and drink milk to boost your health. The only other move you have is to launch your grappling hook. Because of this simplicity, the game is pretty easy to play.
Graphically it has a cartoon look that fits well with the intended younger audience, but it also makes it look like it could just as easily have been released on the Wii. I guess I was hoping that it would be deeper than what it was. It looked like there was some potential for a fun game where you play as a knight, but instead, you get another controller waggle game. Still, as it is, I’m sure my son would like it.
