On top the the PS3 System Update announcement Playstation head honcho Kazuo Hirai has just made a video announcement that phased restoration of the Playstation Network has begun around the world. In the announcement he says that basically all core services, such as account management and online play is being restored, Playstation Store and related services remain down.
A quick check of my recently update PS3 though shows that the service is still offline and I have yet to be prompted to change my password, this might mean it’s being brought online by region and that the restoration might occur in some areas but not all areas at the same time.
