No this isn’t Groundhogs Day, and no I didn’t screw up and republish an old post. Earlier this evening Cnet reported that one of their “observers” is reporting that a hacker group is planning another attack on Sony for this weekend. As per the groups IRC channel they plan on hacking into the Sony website and using it to publish customer information that was supposedly gathered from previous attacks. All this comes on the heels of the switch being flipped back on the Playstation Network. The group claims to already have access to various Sony servers and will being the attack on Saturday.
It isn’t known what group this is, but Anonymous continues to deny being behind the PSN and SOE hacks. And for anyone who knows Anonymous’s past attacks, they know the group isn’t one who tries to steal data, they are a group who focuses on companies that are in the wrong in their eyes and attacks them with DDoS attacks to bring their website and or service down. Many gamers and gaming websites continue to point fingers at Anonymous for the now two week long PSN outage but the fact is the group has never been out to steal consumer information, they have always been on the side of the user and freedom. They attacked those against Wikileaks in the name of freedom of speech, they initially attacked Sony due to Sony’s stance on jailbreaking and allowing users the right to use their system as they wanted. Needless to say this might be a very interesting weekend in this on-going saga. Many people think that if this attack is successful this could very well be a death blow to the Playstation and if the attack causes any additional harm to the almost rebuilt PSN that Sony might be forced to pull the plug on the network for a much longer term.
