The April MMO Update

All of the MMO news from the previous month smushed into a very nice article...if I do say so myself.

CHAMPIONS ONLINE
Champions Online has gone free-to-play. This was probably already known, but more importantly I have been playing it with friends and really like it for some reason. It might be the vast customization that some MMO’s lack or it could be we are all superheroes and beating stuff up. I probably like it so much though, because I can use my 360 controller by simply plugging it in.

Seeing as the game was slated to be on the Xbox 360 the interface is in the game showing controller buttons over your skills, and what buttons to press for various things in the game. A nice touch for that learning curve of using the controller. On top of all of this the gameplay is a lot of fun too. It’s not the typical slow combat of targetting and hitting skills, very fast paced and a lot of action. Best comparison is that it is similar to Dragon Age II combat but with more skills.

As I stated, it is free to play and you aren’t severely limited by this and can still enjoy the game almost fully. So if you are bored and are craving some villain-thwarting, download it.

GUILD WARS 2
PAX East was earlier this month obviously. We were there and luckily we wrote a whole mess of stuff, so I won’t have to cover it all here thank Lyssa (Guild Wars god reference? I think so!)

Guild Wars 2 Thief Hands On (Video of us playing along with Arenanet playing and walking us through)
Guild Wars 2 Guardian Hands On (Short gameplay video from us and some good bits of info)
Guild Wars 2 Norn Walkthrough Video (This was in our meeting with Arenanet, it was originally 32 minutes, I had to cut it down)
Guild Wars 2 Attribute System Details and Guild Wars 2 Crafting System Details (I summarize all the good stuff about these two new systems)

STAR WARS THE OLD REPUBLIC
If you are anxiously awaiting the SWTOR release which we found obvious at PAX when the lines to play the game were absurd then you should start rounding up your friends and create your guild HERE in preparation.  Am I the only one who thinks they could have found a cooler word than Guild for Star Wars? No? Alright.
You can also see a developer walkthrough of  Taral V HERE.

To wrap that up we also have a video of the possible progression of a Jedi Knight character below.

ALL POINTS BULLETIN
Yes this game is still going on and in BETA. I am in it, but that is all I can say. I can’t mention that my Alienware laptop struggles to run it for some reason but thats neither here nor there. Anyways below is a video from GamersFirst that gives an update on the game in newscast form.

UNDEAD LABS
Undead Labs the current makers of the Zombie MMO for the Xbox 360 did two interviews with Dead Central and Bloody-Disgusting talking about their design philosphy, work ethic, and giving more information about class3 the arcade game that will precede the MMO. Obviously our site needs a more grimmacing title in order to get an interview with them, I guess we are just too conservative. I am petitioning a name change as I type, maybe to something about sacrificing children or small animals. IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT FROM US?!

Back on topic I will be finishing off this month’s installment with my signature rip out the facts from an article and list them, just like this one that I did last week for the game:

1. Class3 will focus on survival.

2. Rather than just running around and killing zombies, you’ll be doing things like finding and fortifying a home base, going out into infested areas to scavenge for supplies, and rescuing other survivors and bringing them back to your community.

3. They are creating a true open world that gives you the freedom to explore your surroundings and take on enemies at your own pace. Of course, just like in the real world, there will be plenty of stories just waiting to be told, but how and when those stories unfold will be based on your actions and the choices you make while you play.

4.The game’s world is similar to the real world.

5. Class3 takes place in a small town located in an area that feels a lot like eastern Washington.

6. The game will not be out this year.

I will end this with a good quote from Emily Diehl when she was asked about why Xbox Live. I have been telling people why since they announced MGS was publishing and if you are following this game excessively be sure to download the arcade game because how the players react to that will be very important to the future of the MMO.

“We chose the Xbox platform primarily for Xbox LIVE, the largest online player community of all consoles. Since we’ll be releasing Class3 first, it’s really important for us to have a large base of players to get feedback from. Their opinions, likes, and dislikes will help guide our efforts as we move forward into building the full online world experience of Class4

Microsoft is also really excited about our vision for bringing online worlds to consoles so they’re ready to support us fully and help us make our goal a reality. Having that relationship with your publisher is always a good thing!”
