Yesterday Valve announced that it is currently developing a “Big Picture” Mode for it’s Steam platform. Big Picture mode will allow gamers to use Steam on a TV screen connected to a PC. The mode will offer controller support and navigation designed for television interaction.
“Our partners and customers have asked us to make Steam available in more places. With the introduction of Steam on the Mac, and soon in Portal 2 on the PS3, we’ve done just that,” said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing for Valve. “With big picture mode, gaming opportunities for Steam partners and customers become possible via PCs and Macs on any TV or computer display in the house.”
This is pretty nice news as Steam has truly become the top digital game provider around. And with the move to TVs you’ll no longer have to purchase multiple copies of games for both a PC and TV connected console. I wonder if a Steam powered standalone device might be in the works for the future?
