ESPN is a pretty neat feature on the Xbox 360 but they are under utilizing its potential on a platform meant for competition. Now in the past update Xbox and ESPN came together and gave us another downloadable application that lets you watch the latest sporting news and highlights (commercial free). They even made it Kinect compatible so you can navigate by voice or hand motions.
It is cool and all but I do not see people flocking to their 360′s to watch a few clips that they could see on TV because they replay them so often. To get people to really use the service and have people dying to check it, something needs to be added.
When you create an application for a platform thats demographic are mostly male and competitive there seems to be a no-brainer feature that isn’t offered. I personally can see myself firing up my Xbox,signing-in, and before I start gaming I could go into ESPN and then…update my fantasy team for the week.
Yes, the feature I am talking about is being able to start, join, and participate in Fantasy Sports right from your 360. This will have people going on the ESPN app daily to check things and while they are on it they might as well catch the highlights from the hockey game yesterday. I can even see them being able to sneak advertisements similar to what Microsoft does on the dashboard before playing videos and have no chance of rioting.
The people I play with it online love to have fun versing other players and competing over Xbox Live. Allowing Live members to start fantasy leagues with other members that can lead to them playing together in other games could turn Xbox Live into a better community and maybe even a little like The League on FX.
