EA Sports today announced a new program called Online Pass for it’s upcoming titles. Similar to the VIP program found in EA’s Bad Company 2, Online Pass is a one-time use code that comes with all new copies of games. However unlike the current VIP program Online Pass doesn’t only offer free bonus content, but is also your key to play the games online. The program will begin with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 and then with future Xbox 360 and PS3 titles. Those who purchase their games used won’t be totally left out in the dark, you will have two options, first is a 7 day free trial. And the second option is to purchase an Online Pass for $10 on the Playstation Store, or 800 MS Points on the Xbox Live Marketplace, which will unlock all the extra features.
It will be very interesting to see the community’s response on this new way of online gaming. While this new system will only impact a small majority of gamers, I can’t remember the last time I purchased a used game. I wonder if this new system might also be signaling a change in Xbox Live pricing as now you will still be required to have a Gold level account. FOr all the details and the special features you’ll get with the Online pass head over to the official site.
