Well both Sony and Microsoft have concluded their respective Keynotes to kick off CES 2010. While CES isn’t a gaming centric convention both companies did touch on their respective consoles, with Microsoft focusing a little more to gaming then Sony. Both companies touted numbers and figures amongst other juicy tidbits, here is a quick recap of both:
Sony:
38 Million PSN users
1.7 Million PS3s sold the last quarter in North America
PSN to be expanded beyond the PS3 and PSP, will be incldued in other Sony products such as Blu Ray players, TV, netbooks, notebooks, PCs yada yada
Microsoft:
39 Million total Xbox 360 consoles sold
Almost 10 Million people have use non-gaming Xbox Live applications
Mediaroom coming to Xbox 360 consoles connected to AT&T Uverse
Project Natal to be released Holiday 2010
Game Room bringing Retro Gaming to Xbox 360
Well as you can see there was a lot more going on for the Xbox 360, but again you must note this is CES, and Sony and Microsoft are two very different companies. Sony makes hardware, while Microsoft makes software (and the Xbox 360) so while it might seem there was a lot of XBox 360 news, a lot of this dealt with software updates that effect not only the 360 but also PCs. Meanwhile Sony also showed off tons of new hardware and the new Blu Ray 3D tech.
By the numbers both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have done strong the past 12 months, and will continue to do so. People are downloading digital content more so then ever and both companies are making it easier to access this content in more places. While Mediaroom looks nice, the fact is if your not in an area that has a service provider using it you don’t get its great features. Project Natal release this year was pretty solidly known. Game Room was a bit of a surprise and it will find a lot of fans, and be great for families. It will be interesting to see which companies they will strike deals with to bring those classics to our tv screens. For videos of Game Room and Project Natal head over to our youtube page.
2010 is shaping up to be big, lots of solid releases and I can’t wait to get my hands on Natal at E3!
