VGR Console Holiday Guide

WIth the Holiday’s quickly approaching our last shopping guide is here. There are many choices for console games, some good, some bad and quite a few great titles spanning many genres. Here are our suggestions for console games for the gamer on your gift list.

Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360/PS3)
Not only was MW2 the biggest game launch EVER, but it builds on a stellar game and is nothing short of perfect. While the single player action is a little lacking, Modern Warfare has always been about multiplayer, with many new additions to online play, and the new Spec Ops mode Modern Warfare is a buy for any fan of FPS games.

Uncharted 2 (PS3)
Another sequel and another amazing game. Furthering the story of NAthan Drake, gamers will be thrusted into a great action adventure story. This game not only has a great story (which could easily be adapted to a screenplay) but looks and plays amazingly. Theres nothing better then the minor details in Uncharted 2, its amazing when trying to move across a moving train and seeing your characters feet drag along the tracks. Again Uncharted 2 is a must buy.

Madden NFL 10 (Xbox 360/PS3)
The Madden franchise has been around forever. Madden 10 can easily be considered a reboot of the franchise, every aspect of the game has been overhauled and the game is great both offline and online. EA Sports focused a lot on the finer details of what goes on during any given Sunday and really captured the energy of an NFL game.

NCAA Football 2010 (Xbox 360/PS3)
NCAA Football 10 was my first go round with the franchise and I must say it was great. The game looked great, played fast and was so jammed packed with the hoopla of a college football game. The games Dynasty Mode is so much fun to play and will keep you stuck to your controller for hours. This would be a great game for the college student on your gift list.

Wet (Xbox 360/PS3)
Wet is a game of mixed reviews. Taking a very interesting art direction and being presented as a movie really makes this game unique. Throw in all fighting and blood and gore and you get a very fun game. While it does get repetitive, its the first game in awhile that I wanted to just keep playing and when I wasn’t playing I wanted to play it, the game just had that “it” factor.

Assassins Creed 2 (Xbox 360/PS3)
The first game of this series was great but was quite linear feeling even with the open worldness. Well don’t worry AC2 really breaks out and is great. The same fighting system is back with some tweaks, and many new weapons. Also the missions are laid out with a much more open world feel. Besides the missions of the story there are plenty of side missions players can do, and other activities outside the storyline. AC2 again looks amazing and has some huge worlds.

Dirt 2 (Xbox 360/PS3)
Dirt was a great racing, it really grabbed rally racing and looked good. Dirt 2 built off the first game, and added some new race modes, and really bumped up the graphical goodness. Dirt 2 has an all new lighting system which just looks amazing, from sun glare to night courses with many projected lights, the game just looks great. While the Dirt series really isn’t a simulator it isn’t super arcadey either. Dirt 2 is great for any racing fan.

Halo 3: ODST (Xbox 360)
While it hurts to put this on the list, its Halo. Halo is a juggernaut and even though to me it has subpar graphics and at this point is kicking a dead horse, many gamers love the series and log many hours playing it. ODST breaks from the Halo mold and gives players a squad based focus Halo title. While this would have been a great DLC package, you gonna be stuck shelling out full game price for Halo 3: ODST. If you have a Halo fan to buy for this might be a good choice.

The New Super Mario Bros. (Wii)
The Super Mario Bros. are back and they are in a more old school setting. This is a very enjoyable game, and will bring back many gamers to the times of the NES. Unlike Mario games in the past this one take a much bigger focus on multiplayer action and can support up to 4 players. If your buying for any aged gamer with a Wii this is the title to get.

DJ Hero (Xbox 360/PS3)
The Hero franchise has been around for a long time.  And its finally leaving its guitar and rock roots and jumping into the club scene.  While at first glance DJ Hero might not be on the top of everyone’s list, once you play it you’ll be hook.  WIth amazing remixed tracks and a real fun new controller DJ Hero is a great game for any music fan.

God of War Collection (PS3)
While this is a multipack of two older PS2 titles, these versions have gone through some graphical upgrades and are presented in HD.  And this is the perfect time to ask for these as God of War 3 will be out next year.  Oh and they are awesome games as well.

This was a rather big year of great game releases and not to bore you any further here is a few other possible choices.  Batman: Arkham Asylum,  Need For Speed: Shift, Fight Night Round 4, The Beatles: Rock Band,  NBA 2k10, Killzone 2, and MLB 09: The Show 09
